About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Am I eligible for the 72 hour visa

I have booked a cruise to Japan, which leaves the port of Shanghai.

Arrive in Shanghai 07:05 am (first day)
Cruise leaves port at 4 pm (second day)
Depart boat after cruise (third day)
Flight to Singapore is booked for next day at midnight (fourth day)

If I do not qualify, would I be eligible for the 144 hour visa?

Thanks

I apologise for the confusion.

Day 1 arrive in Shanghai at 07:05 am
Day 2 boat leaves cruise terminal at 4 pm

Then I am on an 8 day cruise to Japan.
Then the cruise arrives back to Shanghai at 7 am where I will be spending an additional 2 days in Shanghai. See below for an itinerary.

Day 1 - Shanghai
Day 2 - Shanghai
Day 2 - 10 - Japan
Day 11 - Shanghai
Day 12 - Shanghai then flying to Singapore.

I hope this helps clarify any misunderstandings you had of my trip. Any advice you provide will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Lewis

Lewis, I have to admit that I don't understand your itinerary.

You have written that you have booked a cruise to Japan, this is fine.
You have written that you will arrive in Shanghai at 07:05 am (first day), this is fine
You have written that your cruise leaves port at 4:00 pm (second day), this is fine

And now:

Depart boat after cruise (third day). What does it mean? I have never seen such a hectic cruise that can be accomplished within a day, even if Japan is not so distant from Shanghai :)

Please, could you explain a bit more thoroughly your itinerary after your departure from Shanghai... Like this I don't understand anything. Thanks and apologies for not understanding your question.

Lewis, not I can understand your itinerary perfectly. You will be eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai twice. Anyway, there are two conditions, but I'm more than certain that you fulfill them:

- Your flight from, I assume Europe to Shanghai is not allowed to have any additional landing within mainland China and in Japan
- Your flight from Shanghai to Singapore is not allowed to have any additional landing within mainland China and in Japan

As you can see, you will just check about these two details and if you are fine with this, you are definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai twice and you don't need any kind of visa.

By the way, 72 hour visa free transit has been replaced in Shanghai by 144 hour visa free transit a couple of years ago. Also, it is important that you use correct terminology because it is not 144 hour visa, but 144 hour visa free transit, so there is no visa at all :)
