About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Do I need to apply for the visa prior to my travel, or just at the origin airport?

I am traveling home from Thailand to the United States with a long layover in China (less than 24 hours.) I called the China Embassy in the US to confirm if any documentation was required prior to the trip & they said I need to report to the city of Guangzhou that I will be traveling & want a free in-transit visa. From this page it looks no notification is necessary prior to notifying the Airline in Viatnam that I wish to transit the city of Guangzhou during my layover. Is that correct? Or do I need approval in advance?

When you're on a 24h transit, you don't need to inform anybody.
Just check-in in Vietnam and they'll see that you're on transit.
