Thank you for the response. Yes i was told that i will have to re-check at Shanghai after collecting my bag. Do i have to have a boarding pass to the second flight along with my confirmed ticket to receive the temp visa permit at immigration? or just the confirmed air ticket is sufficient?
Is the arrival and departure at Terminal 2 is close by there? I was told my flight from Auckland and departure flight will be at Terminal 2. Thanks.

Cheers.
Since i'm only transiting and only have to re-do my bag, do i have to go through immigration and customs? is there a transit area where i can pick up my bag before immigration and handover to Finnair counter and check-in?

No, you don't need any kind of visa because you will be perfectly covered by 24 hour visa free transit.

Since you were told that you will have to collect your luggage and perform a recheck, your layover of 3.5 hours is exactly the time needed to perform all the formalities.

You will apply for a temporary entry permit upon your landing in Shanghai at 24 hour visa free transit counter. You will present your flight tickets (printouts in reality) with visible long 14 digit number and your passport. You will get this permit (no fee at all) and you will proceed with the formalities to reach your boarding gate for your flight to Helsinki on time.

You will be just fine, but keep in mind that although you have 3.5 hours, you will have to start with the resolving of the formalities and among them this temporary entry permit is number one.

You must be flying then on separate tickets when you have to collect your luggage and perform a recheck, right?

You just need your flight tickets printouts. You don't need a boarding pass for your second flight because you will obtain it during your recheck for your flight to Helsinki. You will present your flight ticket for Helsinki and also your passport at 24 hour visa free transit counter. You don't need anything more than that.

You will be able to perform all the formalities on time since both of your flights will use T2 if you are flying on Air New Zealand and Finnair. In reality, this is quite large airport and relatively time consuming. Anyway, you will be just fine with your 3.5 hour layover. Just be relaxed.

This is a detail that I cannot confirm for certainty, but it is usual that some "shortened" immigration clearance is done regardless of the fact that you are just in transit. Also, it is quite possible that you will be able to hand over your luggage at Finnair counter and check-in, but since there are numerous different procedures within different airports, I cannot pretend to be an expert for Pudong airport and to tell you everything in detail, especially because some operations are changing on weekly basis. In reality, this is not such a problem whatever the procedure will be because you have quite enough time to accomplish the procedure regardless of the fact how it will look like. I would suggest you to send an email to Finnair and I expect that they will promptly answer to your query because they have quite an extensive Chinese operations.
