About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Canadians going to Thailand through Shanghai.

Hi all,

Can you please confirm if Canadians need a tourist visa if we are just staying in Shanghai for less than 24 hours?

Our itinerary is: Canada – Shanghai – Phuket- Singapore – Shanghai – Canada.

Our layovers are 22 hours on our way to Phuket and 7 hours on our way back to Canada.

I believe that we can just apply for the 72 hours transit visa at the Shanghai Airport but I want to make sure cause I called the Chinese consult in Toronto and the consulate agent wasn’t able to confirm.

In reality, consulates and embassies are never an address for the questions of this type because the transit issues are outside of their reach because it is a Chinese immigration that is in charge with this subject. In other words, totally different ministries.

Your situation is really very simple. You are eligible for 24 hour visa free transit both ways. The reason why 24 hours? Because you will stay in Shanghai for less than 24 hours.

You will print out your tickets and take those printouts with you. You will declare at check-in in Canada that you will travel to Thailand via Shanghai using 24 hour visa free transit.

Upon your arrival in Shanghai, having in mind the length of your layover, you will apply for a temporary entry permit at 24 hour visa free transit counter. You are advised to bring a confirmation of your accommodation booking and enclose it with your application to be allowed to exit the airport and explore the city, along with a normal sleep in the hotel.

One more detail. You are advised to use correct terminology. It is 24 hour visa free transit and not 24 hours transit visa or similar. Simply speaking, there is no visa at all.
