You need a transit visa prior to arrival. Indian citizens are not eligible for 144-hour transit and your transit time will exceed 24 hours thus also rendering you ineligible for 24-hour transit.

What if I am there at Beijing on the 4th December at 4.30 pm and my flight to mumbai is at 12.05 am on the 5th? Also, Indians are eligible for the 72 hr transit visa, right? Or is is it the 24 hrs one only eligible?

If your flight arrives in Beijing at 16:30 on December 4 and departs at 00:05 on December 5, you are definitely eligible for 24 hour visa free transit and you don't need any kind of visa. By the way, Indian citizens are eligible for 24 hour visa free transit only.

Suraj, you were inconclusive regarding your itinerary. Will your itinerary take less or more than 24 hours within China? This is essential detail before we can offer you a correct and reliable answer.

Suraj, you are definitely eligible for 24 hour visa free transit and you don't need any kind of visa. You have asked how to apply for a transit visa, but in reality, you don't need one.

You will print out your flight tickets and have those printouts with you. Also, you will declare at check-in in US that you will travel to Mumbai via Beijing using 24 hour visa free transit. After a short inspection of your tickets, you will be allowed to board the plane.

Upon your arrival in Beijing and having in mind that you will change the terminals and that imply that you are not traveling on a single (through) ticket, you will approach 24 hour visa free transit counter where you will apply for a temporary entry permit. This is completely free of charge and you will just present your flight tickets and your passport. After that you will collect your luggage, clear the formalities and change the terminals. When the time comes, you will make a recheck and board your onward flight to Mumbai.
