About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Separate flights Okay?

I am planning to visit chengdu but can't find a layover for chengdu long enough to qualify for the 144 hr no visa.
Can I book 2 separate tickets?
1. New york to Chengdu (stay for 3 days)
and then
2. Chengdu to Bangkok
Would I still qualify for the 144 hr no visa?

I Book a flight from New York to Chengdu (3 day stay) but has a stop at San Francisco for 1 hr.
Would that still work? The stop isn’t in any of the Cities in China but the US.
Flight #2 from chengdu to Bangkok is non-stop
