About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

LAX to Shanghai to Beijing to DPS

Hi,

I am traveling from
LAX to Shanghai (lands Nov. 4th at 6:25am, I don't plan to leave the airport.)
Shanghai to Beijing (Land in Beijing Nov. 4th at 5:50pm)
Beijing to DPS (Leave Beijing Nov. 8th at 4:15pm)

Do I need a visa?

Yes, unfortunately, you need a Chinese tourist (L) visa for your itinerary. The reason is very simple, you are not allowed to travel through two Chinese transit zones in a row, in your case Shanghai and Beijing, and to remain eligible for 72/144 hour visa free transit. In reality, this itinerary with a consecutive travel through two Chinese transit zones would be eligible only within 24 hour visa free transit.

You are advise or to change your flights and if that is not possible, apply for a 10 year Chinese multiple entry visa, literally tomorrow to handle all the formalities before your departure date!
