About:How to Travel to China without a Visa

trade event in Beijing and Shangai

If I leave Los Angeles on the 29th oct arriving Beijing on the 30th Oct at 5:30am. Attend the event in Beijing and fly out of Beijing on the 30th Oct at 8:30 pm (so less than 24 hours) to go to Shanghai. And leave Shanghai at 1:55am on the 2nd Nov....would it be inside the 72 hours Visa free transit?

No, unfortunately not. When you have two Chinese destinations in a row (Beijing and Shanghai in your case), you are limited to only 24 hours, i.e. 24 hour visa free transit. In your case and with your dates, you are not eligible for any kind of visa free transit scheme. You are advised to obtain a Chinese visa in advance or to rearrange your flights.
