About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

PVG to SHA transfer is this a free 24 hour transit visa?

arriving Nov 6 on United from Chicago to PVG. Separate ticket on China Southern from Hongqiao airport (SHA) on a flight first to Guangzhou Baiyun (CAN) and then to Colombo Sri Lanka (CMB). My arrival time to PVG on November 6 is 14:50 and departure from SHA on Nov 7 is 10:15.

I will also have to transfer between SHA and PVG on November 22, but my time on the ground is 4 hours.

Do I need a visa in advance or apply on arrival since it is under 24 hours. Thank you.

Whether you need a visa depends on the total time you will spend in Mainland China, not only Shanghai. Assuming you will be on the 3:35 PM CZ flight to CMB, you will need a visa as your total time exceeds the 24-hour mark by 45 minutes. You can either get a 10-year tourist visa for $140 or change your flights.
