About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I'm landing in Chengdu, China with a return ticket. Can just buy a ticket out?

Hello, I left China a month ago to process my work permit. Unfortunately, this process takes a bit longer. However, I still would like to use my return ticket to fly back to Asia, stay in Chengdu for 48 hours and fly out to Bangkok. The ticket to Bangkok I still need to buy, so it would be a separate booking. I this enough proof that I leave?

Not entirely sure what you mean, but rule of thumb is that you must purchase your ticket in advance and not until you have arrived in Chengdu, otherwise airline will refuse boarding.
