Linda, your itinerary is not eligible for any kind of visa free transit scheme. You will have two consecutive stops in two different Chinese transit areas (Guangzhou and Shanghai) and your total time in China will exceed 24 hours. In other words, you need a Chinese (L) visa obtained in advance.

Of course, you can rearrange your flights to fly directly (nonstop) to Shanghai because like this you will be eligible for 144 hour visa free transit. Just to present that more clearly:

Your itinerary:

NYC - Guangzhou - Shanghai - Japan

Could be eligible, but only for 24 hour visa free transit

Proposed itinerary:

NYC - Shanghai - Japan

Eligible for 144 hour visa free itinerary.

Of course, you can create several more eligible itineraries, but you have to have in mind that those itineraries cannot have any additional stop of any kind within mainland China and in Japan.
