About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Help, Thank you!

Hi,

If I depart London on Monday evening and arrive in Shanghai (via Hong Kong) on Tuesday afternoon, does this mean I can spend Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in Shanghai and then must fly out from Shanghai (Via Hong-Kong) that Friday evening to go back to the UK? I hold a Belgium passport, am I eligible for a 72 hours visa in that case for the scenario described.

Thank you!

Oh ok, so if I fly London-Hong Kong-Shanghai-London, then I would be eligible for 144h transit visa correct?

Unfortunately not because the portion that is of crucial importance for your eligibility is:

Hong Kong - Shanghai - Hong Kong

As you can see, this is not a transit, but a return flight or a visit to China. Simply speaking, there is no third country.

You have to obtain a Chinese tourist (L) visa in advance or to rearrange your flights.

I suggest you to use Macau.

For example

Hong Kong - Macau (by ferry or bus) - Shanghai - Hong Kong

Also, 72 hour visa free transit has been replaced in Shanghai by 144 hour visa free transit a couple of years ago.
