About:First Time China

Thinking of flying from London UK to Beijing, spending 4 days there and flying on to Osaka, Japan.

We will then fly back to London from Osaka 2 weeks later with a stopover of 4 hours in Beijing to change planes. I assume that we will be eligible for the 144 hours visa free transit on the way out and will not require a visa for the return journey as we will be staying in the airport

Your first stop in Beijing will be eligible for 144 hour visa free transit. Anyway, you should have in mind that you are not allowed to have any additional stop within mainland China of any kind on both of your flights.

Your second stop will be covered by 24 hour visa free transit because your transit time will be less than 24 hours.

To conclude, you are perfectly fine for visa free transit in Beijing twice.
