James, you are eligible for visa free transit in China twice in principle, but just to be certain here is a couple of conditions that your itinerary has to fulfill:
- Every single flight that arrives and departs to/from Beijing is not allowed to have any additional landing of any kind within mainland China
- Your cruise is not allowed to have its last port of call, immediately before Tianjin, in mainland China
If the above mentioned is fulfilled, you are definitely eligible:
- During your first short stop in Beijing you will be covered by 24 hour visa free transit
- During your second stop in Beijing for 144 hour visa free transit. 72 hour visa free transit has been replaced in Beijing area by more generous 144 hour visa free transit a couple of years ago. I assume that you have messed up with your dates in your post, but never mind because I have in mind that you have mentioned 3 nights.
By the way, your connecting time in Beijing is very tight, so I hope you are traveling on a single (through) ticket. If I'm right, you will be fine, but in the same time, hurry up with the formalities, just in case.
