US citizen applying for Chinese visa in Europe

I am a traveling US citizen currently in Europe, I do not have residency in any European country, but I do have the visa free entry inside European countries. Can I apply for a visa in any European country for the Chinese visa or will I be forced to go back to the US? I do not want to attain a Chinese visa by flying to Hong Kong and I do not wish to fly all the way back to the US for the visa process. What are my options?

IIRC Chinese missions in most Schengen countries do not accept applications from non-EU citizens without a D visa or a residence permit. Applying in the US would also have the advantage of getting a 10-year visa at the same cost.
