Subhash, do I properly understood you that you are arriving on 29/10 at 06:30 (6:30am) from UK? Also, am I right when I assume that you will depart from Beijing the next day at 01:40 (1:40am) to Sydney?

If I'm right, then your itinerary is eligible for 24 hour visa free transit, but to exit the airport you will have to apply for a temporary entry permit upon your landing in Beijing. You have to know, that the issuing of temporary entry permit is not a passenger's right, but a privilege that depends upon discretion of immigration authorities. Since your layover is quite long, you should book your hotel accommodation in advance and have an accommodation booking confirmation in hard copy. Also, if you intend to visit the Great Wall with a tour, you should also bring a confirmation for that tour. Having all the mentioned in your hand during your application will definitely increase your chances to almost certainty.
