About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

would I be eligible for the 144hr visa?

Hi, if I were to go to travel from Perth, Australia to Shanghai (via 2 hr stopover in Bangkok), then spend 5.5 days in Shanghai, then travel to back to Bangkok for a few days before returning to Perth, would I be eligible for the 144hr visa?

Of course not. Bangkok-Shanghai-Bangkok requires a visa.

So even though I'm Australian, because I'd be stopping in Bangkok I would need a visa? What about if I stopped in Kuala Lumpur instead?

Yes, you would need a visa. You must be in transit to a third country to transit without visa. Malaysia-China-Thailand would work. Malaysia-China-Malaysia would not.
