Is a seat assignment needed?

Traveling from US to Shanghai, then Shanghai to Bangkok 2 days later. If the airline to Bangkok doesn't give us a seat assignment in advance, are we still eligible for 144 hours? The airline charges extra for a seat assignment.

The 16 digit ticket number is what you need. By confirmed seat they mean not flying standby like an airline employee
