Under the condition that your last port of call, immediately before Shanghai was in some other country, different than mainland China, you are perfectly eligible for 24 hour visa free transit, so you don't need any kind of visa.
You are advised to print out your flight ticket (e-ticket that you have in your email) and to have that printout with you, ready to be presented to relevant authorities. Exactly this itinerary that will look exactly like this:
X country (different than mainland China) - Shanghai - US
Made you eligible for visa free transit in Shanghai. You will be asked by authorities in X country (where you will have your last port of call, immediately before Shanghai) about your travel plan and you will tell them that you will travel to US via Shanghai using 24 hour visa free transit and you will present them your flight ticket. After a short inspection you will be allowed to proceed with your cruise toward Shanghai.
During your approach to Shanghai, you will receive an arrival/departure card (yellow form) that you will fill out. Upon your arrival in Shanghai and maybe even before, on the ship, you will also fill out a form for visa free transit in Shanghai. You will hand over your filled out forms, your passport and your flight ticket printout to the Chinese immigration for a short inspection and after a minute, you will be allowed to exit the cruise terminal and to transfer to the airport. You are also allowed to explore the city if you have some available time before your flight.
