About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Hong Kong - Shangai - Italy

Hello,
I've been traveling 3 weeks in China using a 30 days single entry tourist visa.
Now I've arrived in Hong Kong (by train from Changsha) after having changed my original travel plan and my single entry visa has expired (since entering HK is treated like leaving the mainland country from what I intend).
I'm staying in Hong Kong for 4 days then I'm leaving for Shangai where I'm staying 48 hours before coming back home to Italy.
So my trip is: HK-->Shangai Pudong-->Milan, with all the flights and accommodations already booked.
Am I eligible for a 72h transit visa even if my chinese tourist visa has just expired?
Thank you very much!

Nik, your expired visa has zero impact on your eligibility for visa free transit. You have traveled throughout China and, as you said and your Chinese visa has expired at the very moment when you have crossed from mainland China to Hong Kong.

Now, you have prepared your journey and the best thing is that your itinerary is definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai area. 72 hour visa free transit has been replaced in Shanghai by 144 hour visa free transit visa a couple of years ago. Here just one warning... Your flights should not have any kind of additional landing within mainland China!

You should just print out your flight tickets and have them with you along with your accommodation confirmation.
