Actually, there is no "72 hours visa". There is 72 hour visa free transit and it is absolutely free. There are no charges beside the price you have paid for your flight tickets :)

If you are doing a stop in Beijing for 9 hours and if you are in transit from country A to country C where China (Beijing) is country B, then you don't need any kind of visa. For example, this itinerary is eligible for 24 hour visa free transit:

Auckland - Beijing (9 hours) - Paris

Anyway, if you stay for more than 24 hours, you become eligible for 144 hour visa free transit. Please, keep in mind that 72 hour visa free transit was replaced in Beijing by 144 hour visa free transit a couple of years ago. Of course, some Chinese destinations still have only 72 hour TWOV like Xi'an, Harbin, Guilin and several more.
