About:How to Travel to China without a Visa

Travelling across China takes 26 hours

Hi I'am a Hungarian citizen.

I will travel to Bali with China Southern airlines across China from Vienna to Urumqi 2h55m aircraft change, from Urumqi to Guangzhou 2h05m aircraft change and from Guangzhou to Bali. It would be enough with the 24 hours direct transit, but backward it takes 26 hours for us. We have a 18h50m stop in Guangzhou and a technical stop in Urumqi takes 2 hours. (we are going to arrive to Guangzhou at 14:10 on the 4th of November and we leave Urumqi 16:05 on the 5th of November). So all together we will spend 25h55. Do anybody knows if we have to make a visa or it is one with 24 hours direct transit?

Aron, you will need a double entry Chinese transit (G) visa.

During your first itinerary it is true that you will stay for less than 24 hours within China, but here we have a problem of Urumqi that allows only 2 hours of transit within 24 hour visa free transit. Urumqi is very specific in this regard. If you only had 2 hours layover, you would be eligible to travel visa free. In this case, you have to obtain a visa.

During your second itinerary, you will stay within China more than 24 hours and since you will use two airports, you will not be eligible for 24 hour visa free transit. Interestingly, this time your transit through Urumqi would be perfectly eligible, but you have more than 24 hours. To conclude, this itinerary requires a visa too.

I don't know when do you plan to travel, but I suggest you to apply for this double entry transit visa two or three weeks before your departure.
