About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

brad

i have a 9 hour layover in PVG, travelling from TPE to FRA on separate tickets.
what happens if i am not granted a permission to leave the airport in order to collect and recheck my bags?

does it help if i have it explained in writing (in Chinese) and present to an immigration officer?

thanks!

a quick update - i was permitted to enter China BUT the immigration officers did not like and of my passport stamps from Muslim countries (Saudi Arabia, Algeria, UAE and especially Turkey), they inspected my passport extremely thoroughly and I had to wait in a special area in immigration. Finally I was able to go through but it wasn't the most comforting experience.
another thing is that it takes extra time at check-in and boarding since it flags in the system that there is no valid visa for China and the airline employees need to do extra checks and make phone calls.

Brad, you will be definitely granted a temporary entry permit and you can travel with absolute peace of mind. There is no chance that the authorities deny something like this. You should just print out your e-tickets and have them (printouts) with you ready to be presented to relevant authorities. You really don't need any kind of visa. Just be relaxed because your situation is ideal.

The most important detail is that you have reached your destination and I hope by enjoying very affordable flight ticket :)

Everything else, including the inspection of your passport that was endowed with the stamps from the muslim countries is something that the Chinese immigration authorities regularly do and this occurrence does not represent any special event. Indeed, they particularly dislike Turkish stamps and the reason is very easy to understand. It is the fact that Turkish islamic preachers have done a radicalization of Turkic Uyghurs in Xinjiang province causing a lot of security issues.

You are just fine and you should not think that you are on some kind of Chinese black list. This was just, more or less, a routine "serious" looking presentation of the immigration authorities determination. Really, nothing to worry about.
