About:China Visa Application Procedure and Fee

USA to Shanghai to Taipei to Shanghai to USA

We bought two separate tickets: USA to Shanghai round trip and another for Shanghai to Taipei round trip

1. Can this still qualify for the 144 visa-free (using two separate round trip tickets)?
2. USA fly to Shanghai (stay for 6 days); Shanghai to Taipei (stay for 4 days); then Taipei back to Shanghai (stay for 1 day) prior to flying to USA

Your itinerary, in reality (as you will present it at check-in in US and upon your arrival in Shanghai):

US - Shanghai - Taipei
Taipei - Shanghai - US

If those are your all stops within the itinerary, you are definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai twice. OK, in case if your entire transit time, during your second stop in Shanghai, will be less than 24 hours, then you will be eligible for 24 hour visa free transit. In reality this is totally the same in your case. You should just print out your flight tickets and have them in hard copy.
