You are eligible for 24/144 hour visa free transit in principle. To be certain about your eligibility, here are several conditions your itinerary has to fulfill. This is important because you didn't mention where do you come from to Shanghai. Here are the conditions:

- Your flight from, I assume US, to Shanghai should not have any additional landing of any kind within mainland China and in Japan
- Your cruise should not have its first port of call, immediately after Shanghai, in mainland China port
- Your cruise should not have its last port of call, immediately before Shanghai, in mainland China port
- Your flight from Shanghai to US should not have any additional landing in mainland China and in Japan

If the above mentioned conditions are fulfilled, you will be definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit during your first stop in Shanghai and for 24 hour visa free transit during your second stop in Shanghai because your entire transit after your return from the cruise will be probably less than 24 hours.

Two details more... Please, use correct terminology because it is not free transit visa, but visa free transit, so there is no visa at all. Also, 72 hour TWOV has been replaced by 144 hour TWOV in Shanghai a couple of years ago.
