About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Transit with different airlines

I booked a China Eastern flight to Osaka with transit in shanghai Pudong with return flight from Shanghai Pudong. I intend to visit Japan first, then I travel from Tokyo to Shanghai with a separate booking and other airline, I intend to stay 3 days in Shanghai .
Do I need a transit Visa on the onward flight to Osaka?
Can I apply for the 72h Visa at the end of my trip with this separated bookings?

Guillaume, will your entire itinerary be this one:

Europe - Shanghai - Osaka
Tokyo - Shanghai - Europe?

If this is the case and you don't have additional landings, especially within mainland China, you will be covered by 24 hour visa free transit during your first stop in Shanghai en route to Osaka and during your second stop in Shanghai you will be eligible for 144 hour visa free transit. Please, have in mind that 72 hour visa free transit was replaced by 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai a couple of years ago. Also, you should use correct terminology and it is 24/144 hour visa free transit and not 144 h visa because there is no visa at all.
