About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Transit when Taking the Train to HK

Hi, my brother comes to visit me in Guangzhou but only has single entry tourist visa. Anyway we would like to visit Hong Kong within the first days. So is it possible to get Transit Visa in Guangzhou airport if we buy a train ticket upfront to Hong Kong in the first 6 (144 h visa) days and then later come back and use the normal tourist visa?

Yes, if he tells that clearly to the immigration officer after going to the right immigration booths (visa-free transit passengers usually clear immigration in a separate area so just look for that sign).

Thanks for your answers. I planned to get a train ticket for the new high speed train from guangzhou south to Kowloon West. So you say this train is not possible but we need to take the old one? The real ticket delivery is another issue. I can get pick up code and electronic confirmation but I think real ticket delivery is not possible to outside china or is it?

I would like just to add, that your brother will have to book a train ticket in advance. He has to book the only eligible train, the one departing from Guangzhou East and arriving at Hong Kong Hung Hom railway station. You should not book this train ticket on the original MTR website because their e-confirmation lacks name and passport number. In other words, it is advisable that he books the ticket on this, TCG website, at least 7 days before his intended travel and to offer there your address for a real ticket delivery. He should also have in mind to print out an e-confirmation that he will receive on his email and to bring it with himself as a proof that he will be really in a transit to Hong Kong.

Indeed, you cannot take a high speed train because it is not eligible for any visa free transit scheme. As I have mentioned, you can take only a so called Guangzhou–Kowloon through train. Anyway, it is not such a problem because the entire journey from Guangzhou to Hung Hom railway station takes a bit less than 2 hours. This is not such a pain at all. Real ticket delivery could be performed only within China. In other words, your brother will define the address within China where his real ticket will be delivered. Again, I warn about the right choice of website for ticket purchase because some of them including the original MTR website do not issue an e-confirmation with the name of the passenger. Also, it is not possible for you to book a ticket and send it to your brother because there is no name on this ticket. So, only a valid e-confirmation is accepted as a document that will allow your brother to enjoy 144 hour visa free transit in Guangdong province.
