About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Kathamandu > (two hour plane change at Guangzhou) Beijing > Hong kong >

Hi, We've already booked our flights to beijing but weren't able to get our visas in enough time whilst in the UK

so we already have a flight in to beijing and then out from shanghai a month later that are non-refundable

we readthe only other place than our home country we could get a L tourist visa for that month is in hong kong? Is this true?

because if so and we already have flights to beijing, could we use the 144transit visa to see the capital and then fly to hongkong (flights not booked yet) for 3 days to get our full month visa to then explore further the rest of china before leaving from shanghai as booked.

would this be declared as transit if we haven't booked the hongkong flight yet ? and would having a transit visa affect at all us getting the full L visa?

do we need anything ahead of time for the transit visa?

thanks

When you say "transit visa" you should say "transit WITHOUT visa" because, as you say, you didn't have time to get a visa. This is an important distinction. Your route Kathmandu-Guangzhou-Beijing-Hong Kong allows you only 24 hours transit without visa in China (from scheduled arrival in Guangzhou to scheduled departure from Beijing) and not 144 hours, because you have multiple stops in China. You must have a confirmed flight to Hong Kong when you check-in at Kathmandu or else you will be denied boarding. You will find visa agents in Hong Kong for a L visa. TWOV has no bearing on your application for a visa.

Two stops are two stops, even if you don't leave the airport or even the aircraft. You must have a non-stop flight (which is different from a direct flight, note that quite a few flights in China have "hidden" stops so check carefully).

Hi Saul does this 24 hour for multiple stops apply even if ghaunzhou is just a layover as part of a further flight? we'll only have 2 hours on the ground there without leaving the airport and getting straight onto our plane.

if so do we need to book a direct flight to beijing for the 144 hour without visa?

You will clear immigration at your first stop and proceed as a domestic passenger. There is no "without leaving the airport" option.

Okay thanks Saul, now i just heard from someone that we can get an L tourist visa as british citizens in Kathmandu and don't need to go all the way to hong kong for this.

do you know this to be correct or is the only place to get a chinese visa outside your home country hong kong?
