About:Shanghai Travel

I flew a Canadian from Canada to Japan, to board a cruise ship.

Can he disembark that cruise ship in Shanghai on a Transit Visa, if he has a flight back to Canada that same day?

Could you provide a detailed route? If it is Canada - Japan - Shanghai - Canada, then he is eligible for 144 hour visa free transit.
