Transit visa for UK citizens

Hi,
I am UK passport holder and travelling to Australia. However during my trip I will be spending 3 days in Shanghai.

My itneary is as below:
London - Moscow - Shanghai
Shanghai - Xiamen (Plane change) - Sydney

Will I be able to apply for 72 ? I understand that I may not be eligible for 144 hours as my flight from Shanghai stops in Xiamen but I don't see any such rules for 72 hrs. Can you please confirm.

72 hour visa free transit in Shanghai was replaced with 144 hour visa free transit a couple of years ago. Anyway, even with 72 hour TWOV you wouldn't be allowed to do this trip without a Chinese tourist (L) visa obtained in advance.

Simply speaking, you are not allowed to have two stops within mainland China in a row. You can use such an itinerary only within 24 hour visa free transit scheme, but not 144 hour TWOV.

Now, you have to decide whether you will obtain a Chinese visa in advance or to rearrange your flights. There is no other way. Sorry.
