About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

If fly London to Hong Kong , then hk to shanghai and return the same way , does that qualify me

For a 72 /144 hour visa

Of course, not.

Hong Kong - Shanghai - Hong Kong is not a transit, but just a simple return trip to mainland China.

My suggestion is the following itinerary:

Hong Kong - Shanghai - Macau, but with nonstop flights

From Macau you can easily return back to Hong Kong and this itinerary is eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai (72 hour TWOV was replaced with 144 hour TWOV a couple of years ago).
