I am returning from Sydney via Shanghai for 4 days then Shanghai to Helsinki - Helsinki - Manchester

You don't need any kind of visa if you are a UK citizen and in case that your flights don't have any additional landings within mainland China. In other words, you are perfectly eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai area.
