What if I'm only staying in Shanghai less than 48 hours?

I have a flight that I will land on Saturday 9pm and return on Monday at 6 pm. I'm going there from LAX and then return to LAX. am I covered under the 144 hours rule or do I have to have a ticket to another country other than US.

OK let's try another route.
What if I do LAX - Shanghai - Tokyo (But not ticket back to LAX) ?

Do they care if I have a ticket back to LAX?

You have to have a ticket to another country other than US. Your actual itinerary, simply speaking, requires a Chinese tourist (L) visa obtained in advance. Anyway, if you introduce some other country or eligible territory between LAX and Shanghai within just one leg of your itinerary, you will be eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai area. Something like this:

LAX - Shanghai
Shanghai - Hong Kong - LAX

This is fine and definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai area. Chinese authorities really don't care where will you go after Tokyo. In reality they are interested only about the immediate points before and after your Chinese destination. Everything before and after the mentioned immediate points is definitely not of their interest.
