Transit Visa for round trip flight?

If I have a round trip flight from Los Angeles to Beijing Sept 3rd-8th & was informed I could use a 144hr Transit Visa for the trip... Is this correct? Or would I need to apply for an actual visa to visit for 3.5 days?

You need an actual visa since you are not in transit and there is no time for you to get one (consulate/embassy will close on Labor Day and the urgent processing time is two working days - that is if you meet the requirements). You can either delay your trip by a week and a half so you can get that visa or book and fly another nonstop roundtrip flight to Japan/South Korea/Taiwan/HK/Macau/whichever country that is not the US and back to comply with the conditions of the 144-hour transit.
