OK, now I know a bit more, but I will still have to make some assumptions because you didn't write where from you will arrive in Shanghai. OK, I will assume that you will arrive in Shanghai by a direct flight from US.
If I'm right, then we can talk about two visa free transits in Shanghai.
The first one:
US - Shanghai - Philippines
The second one
Philippines - Shanghai - US
Both of the transits are eligible for 144 hour visa free transit. You will have to declare at check-in in US that you intend to travel to Philippines via Shanghai using 144 hour visa free transit. You will tell practically the same story in the Philippines, but you will tell that you are traveling to US, also via Shanghai. Keep in mind to have your flight tickets in hard copy, i.e. the printouts of your e-tickets.
By the way, you should know that without your trip to the Philippines, you would not be eligible for any kind of visa free transit in Shanghai if your itinerary is as I have presented it above. It is exactly the Philippines that make you eligible for this visa free transit scheme.
