About:240-hour Visa-free Transit in Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Jiangsu

144 hour permit - do we need to register with the police in Shanghai

Hi, thanks for your answers to my previous questions regarding our cruise which docks at Shanghai (for 1 night between Hong Kong and Japan).
VisaCentral (a company providing advice on behalf of NCL) has said that (a) a 144-hour permit is not suitable for 'tourism', only for 'transit' and (b) we would have to register with the Shanghai police within 24 hours of arriving.
I'm not sure how a '2 day tourist' visit and and an 'up to 6 day transit' visit differ ?
And I've not read about registering with the police before.
Are they correct or are they just trying to push their visa service ?

If you ask a visa company then of course they will try to sell their product to you! They're not a public information service! If you qualify for 144 hours transit without visa then obviously you can do tourism around Shanghai (but not the whole of China). If you stay in a hotel, then the hotel will take care of your police registration and you don't have to do anything.

Hi. We don't have a hotel as we will be sleeping on the cruise ship while in Shanghai, will they have to do something ?

Please, don't worry about this detail because sleeping on the cruise ship is perfectly agreed with the Chinese authorities. You are definitely fine with this.
