About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Depart same but connect at different airport

Hi. Does leaving same airport mean leaving China or can I leave same airport (Dalian), fly to Shanghai and then connect to Australia (4 hour layover at Shanghai).

Leaving from the same airport means that you need to leave China from the same airport. Since you will have both layovers in Dalian and Shanghai, you will be neither eligible for the 72 nor 144 h visa-free transit.
