About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

New York —> Austria —> Beijing —>Tokyo

Hello,

I booked a flight from New York, with an overnight layover in Austria, then land in Beijing. I was going to buy a separate plane ticket 2 days later from Beijing to Tokyo. Is this fine (as a USA citizen) to use the 144 hour visa? Is the visa free? Do I need to submit anything before hand or just fill out the form when I land and show proof of my second flight to Tokyo?

Can I expand your question- the guidelines you’ve got to show flight onwards with confirmed seat and date. What does confirmed seat mean? I have a ticket s but it says nothing about a ‘seat’ as such , that is automatic

Your itinerary is definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Beijing. In reality, everything is quite simple:

- You will declare at check-in in Austria that you will travel to Tokyo via Beijing using 144 hour visa free transit. You will present your tickets in hard copy as a proof and after that you will be allowed to board the plane.
- Upon your landing in Beijing, you will approach 144 hour counter where you will fill out the form. You will hand over the form and also present your tickets. After a short inspection, you will be allowed to exit the airport

You are perfectly fine to use two separate tickets and this visa free option is free of any charge and is not a visa, since there is no visa at all within this scheme.

I have noticed that Fred from Australia was talking about the confirmed seat. This is just a bit clumsy way to declare that only the confirmed tickets will be accepted and not those on standby. This is the whole meaning of the infamous "confirmed seat" phrase.
