If Beijing is your only stop within mainland China, you are eligible for 24 hour visa free transit in Beijing. Anyway, to be allowed to exit the airport, you have to options:

- To apply for a 24 hour free entry permit upon landing in Beijing and hoping that the immigration officer will grant you the mentioned permit. You have to know that the issuing of the permit is entirely upon discretion decision of the immigration authorities on the day of your arrival in Beijing.
- To apply for a transit (G) visa in advance. This is more complicated option, but in the same time the only one that guarantees that you will be definitely allowed to leave the airport and explore the city.
