About:240-hour Visa-free Transit in Wuhan

China Southern Changed my Itinerary

there is no longer a direct flight to Guangzhou from JFK on the day I am set to travel. As such China southern wants to route me through Wuhan. However I am only going to be in China for 36hrs. Can I still get a visa in Guangzhou?

Well, this is now a real problem because this new itinerary would not allow you to stay in Guangzhou for that amount of time in case that you intended to use 144 hour visa free transit. In reality with two stops, you are allowed to travel using 24 hour visa free transit because of two stops within mainland China. Even worse detail is the fact that that the mentioned 24 hours starts to expire at the moment of your scheduled arrival in Wuhan. In reality, you would be left just several useful hours in Guangzhou.

If I was you, I would ask from China Southern a full reimbursement and look after a new option that will allow me to enjoy 144 hour visa free transit in Guangdong province. In the case that all the alternative options are noticeably more expensive, I'm afraid that the only feasible option would be to obtain a Chinese visa in advance. The comfort in this case could be the fact that the US citizens can obtain 10 years multiple entry visa for China. So, if you intend to travel to China in the future, you could consider this circumstance as an investment.
