About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit in Guangdong

Thailand to Guangzhou to Hong Kong (by Bus)

The new statement released in May 2019 regarding the 144 hour Transit Without Visa in Guangdong province introduced a lot of rail and land ports that can be used to exit China.

My plan is to fly into Guangzhou and then bus to Hong Kong through the new bridge. I was wondering how one can show that they are leaving China when they are buying a bus ticket at the time of departure. Is an international flight from Hong Kong to a foreign country sufficient proof that I will be leaving the country within 144 hours?

Bo, this is definitely a good question.

The answer is simple. The buses, although eligible, are at the moment impossible to use for 144 hour visa free transit purposes because you simply cannot book a bus ticket online in advance to prove your real intention for a transit. So, unfortunately, you will not be able to travel from Zhuhai to Hong Kong by the bridge. Of course, you can do it later, from Hong Kong to Macau or vice versa. Also, your flight from Hong Kong to some other country is insufficient as a proof for your transit.

To be eligible, you have to use a train or a plane or a ferry from Guangzhou to Hong Kong or a ferry from Shenzhen to Hong Kong or Macau. There are several reliable websites where you can book this tickets and receive an e-confirmation for your purchase via email. You have to print it out and bring with you as a proof of your real transit plan. Also, you will have to use exactly that train, plane or ferry that you have bought the ticket for to leave Guangdong province.
