About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Chinese Visa Information Please

We are UK citizens and in April 2020, my wife and I will be flying to Singapore from the UK to pick up a cruise ship. The ship arrives in Hong Kong on Day 10 and we disembark in Shanghai on Day 16, spend a night in a hotel and fly back to Manchester via Dusseldorf the next day. Will we need Chinese visas?

You are eligible for 24 or 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai in principle, but your itinerary has to fulfill the following conditions:

- Your last port of call, immediately before Shanghai, should not be in mainland China
- Your flight from Shanghai to Düsseldorf should not have any additional landing within mainland China

So, if the above conditions are fulfilled, you are eligible for 24 or 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai. Whether you will be eligible for 24 or 144 hours is determined by the time from your scheduled arrival by your cruise and until your scheduled departure by plane from Shanghai. So, if this period is longer than 24 hours, you will enjoy 144 hour TWOV and if shorter, then 24 hour TWOV. In reality, definitely the same for your status.
