Luggage?

I have a 15 hour layover in Beijing (en route from Manila to Frankfurt), and I plan to go visit the city instead of waiting at the airport. Do I need to bring my luggage with me the whole time? Or does it check through the airport for my connecting flight?

J, here are the answers to your questions:

- You can visit a city after you apply for 24 hour free entry permit upon landing and if your permit is granted. You have to know that the issuing of entry permits is not a passenger's right, but it depends entirely on immigration discretion.

- In case that your permit is granted, of course you don't have to to drag your luggage with you all the time. You can deposit it at one of the left luggage facilities at the airport.

- Whether your luggage is checked all the way to Frankfurt, it depends entirely upon your airline. In case that you have separate tickets, your luggage will be definitely checked only until Beijing and in this case, you will definitely be granted an entry permit because you will have to collect your luggage and make new check-in. In case that you fly on a single (through) ticket, then your luggage is almost certainly, although not granted, checked all the way to Frankfurt. You will know about this detail upon your check-in in Manila where you should ask about this detail. In case that you receive two boarding passes that will mean that your luggage is checked all the way to Frankfurt, but I strongly recommend that you ask, just for a case.
