Round trip to China

Hello we are booking a round trip to Shanghai from the US and probably will stop few nights before heading to Seoul. Are we allowed to apply for free 72hr transit permit?

If your itinerary will be:

US - Shanghai - Seoul - whatever you want

Then, you are eligible for 144 hour visa free transit. This scheme has replaed 72 hout TWOV a couple of years ago.

You should know that your flight from US to Shanghai is not allowed to have any additional stop within mainland China and South Korea.
