Visa from Hongkong to Shenzhen

Hello, I am an US citizen looking to travel from Hongkong to Shenzhen for a few days then back to Hong Kong via train. Will I need a visa to get into Shenzhen and if so can I apply for a short term one at the train station?

There is a 5 day VOA but it costs the same as the 10 year multiple entry visa that the US passport is able to apply for in advance.
