About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Study Abroad Travel Question

I am a US citizen doing a study abroad in Hong Kong. I have a Visa to study in Hong Kong but want to take a weekend off to visit Shanghai.
If I fly both in and out of Hong Kong does this 72 hour Visa-free travel still apply or because I depart and go back to the same location is it not allowed?

It's not allowed but you can fly back to Macau then it's fine to use the 144h twov.
