About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Bejing and Xian

We arrive in Bejing airport on 2 October to catch a connecting flight to Xian for a 2 night stay. We return to Bejing, by train, for 3 nights before embarking on a cruise to Singapore on 7 October. We fly back from Singapore to Bejing on 21 October for a connecting flight to the UK (long way round I know!)
Can we apply for a 144Hour Visa-Free Transit for Bejing, and then, as I understand Xian is not currently in this scheme, apply for a 72 Hour Visa-Free Transit on arrival in Xian?
Bit complicated but any advice would be appreciated.

It is not complicated at all. You must get a visa for China before you fly to Beijing, because you are visiting two transit zones (Beijing, Xi'an) and this immediately limits you to 24 hours visa-free transit in China. Your second entry to China would qualify for visa-free transit, but it will be more convenient to get a double or multiple-entry visa.
