By meaning qualifies do you mean passport being valid ? Also If i was granted this free visa would i still be able to travel to Beijing as i wanted to go there by train for a day trip or isnt this possible ?

No, I mean your passport must be from one of the 53 qualifying countries listed. It only needs 3 months validity. You are permitted to visit Shanghai, or Beijing, but not both. Finally, it is not a "free visa"; it is a transit WITHOUT visa. If you want to visit Shanghai and Beijing you need a visa.

Dear, your itinerary London-Shanghai-Hong Kong is qualified for 144h visa exemption transit. For the policy, you will not be able to travel to Beijing.

All the details are on this site. A tourist visa will allow you to travel freely in Shanghai, Beijing, and almost all of China. You apply by sending the application form, your passport, photos, etc to the Chinese Visa Application Center (CVASC). If you have a UK passport the fee should be around GBP150 each.

Dear, you can't apply online, and you need to submit the application to CVASC in UK and provide your fingerprint.
