About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

A cruise starts in Japan and ends in Shanghai. I fly straight home to Australia. Do I need visa?

No, you don't. Assuming that the entire transfer time between the cruise arrival and plane departure is less than 24 hours, you will be perfectly covered by 24 hours visa free transit in Shanghai. However, please have in mind that your flight from Shanghai to Australia should not have any additional landing within mainland China and a country (or a territory if that was Hong Kong) where your cruise had its last port call, immediately before Shanghai.
