Since you cannot use any visa free option during your first arrival in China because you will travel through several different Chinese transit zones in a row, you definitely need a Chinese visa. Of course, your second arrival in China would be eligible for 24 hours visa free transit, but as US citizens are eligible for 10 year multiple entry Chinese visa (140 USD), I suggest you to obtain one and in this way you will cover your entire trip in the simplest possible way. You should just apply for a visa and enclose your above mentioned trip and also require the issuing of 10 years multiple entry visa. You should apply in advance to have all the formalities resolved well before your departure to Asia.
